The plight of Britain’s second largest construction company had been extensively flagged before last month’s liquidation threatening thousands of jobs, and while a thousand theories abound about Carillion’s failings and the nature of its leadership, Gleave cuts to the chase, pointing to the sheer size of the beast, the tightness of its wafer-thin margins and the reality that the supply chain and subcontractors were effectively bankrolling the business and carrying the risk amid the drive for shareholder value.”
